some time longer. The young lady had only entered upon the eighth month of her gestation, consequently, even if labour should commence, it would be considered as premature. Under such circumstances, without considering it worth my while to wait any longer in the house, I gave a dose of laudanum to my patient to keep her quiet during the night and left her, promising to call again next morning. When I saw the patient at 10 o'clock the following morning, the labour pains had fully set in, though very weak and distant. Towards evening the pains increased in intensity and frequency, and my patient was delivered of an infant girl at 9 p. M. ?In a great hurry I was summoned from an adjoining room by the attending nurse, who had been struck with a certain peculiarity in the conformation of th* infant; at the very threshhold I was informed that something tortuous looking was dangling from the little thing's abdomen. The infant looked quite undeveloped even for its intra-uterine age of seven months and two weeks ; it was a puny little thing, and crying in a very feeble voice; a curious appendage was hanging from the abdomen, out of a patent ooening situate to the right of the origin of the umbilical cord. On turning it over this way and that, and after a careful inspection, it appeared to me to be a goodly portion of the intestines. Its tortuous outline, flowing contents as viewed through the translucent coats, and local connections gave unmistakeable evidence of its being a considerable portion of the intestines accidentally extruded out of the abdominal cavity by some aberration of the formative process. The other end of the protruded gut was adherent to the abdominal parieties a little below the insertion of the cord, by a quantity of adventitious tuberous substance.
